Community Collaboration with Primaries
Working With Our Primary Partners
At Smithdon we understand that knowledge of our students’ primary education and experience is vital in enabling them to make the best possible progress at high school. Consequently, we work closely alongside our cluster primary schools (and a number outside of our cluster) to ensure a smooth transition and pave the way for a continuous, successful educational experience.
We run events throughout the academic year both at Smithdon and in the primary schools. These vary each year and information, both about upcoming and previous collaborative events, can be found below:
Primary Events 2020-21 - TBC
Unfortunately due to COVID-19 we are unable to confirm any events yet for 2020-21 but will post them here as soon as we can. Please check back regularly, as the national situation improves. Some of the things we hope to be able to organise, include:
- Year 5 Experience Days
- Cluster “Motown” Performance
- Primary Sports Football Festival (March)
- Primary Sports Olympic Festival (July)
Year 5 Experience Days - 2019-20
All Year 5 students were invited to Smithdon for three taster days, spread out during the year, to experience learning at Smithdon. The focus of the sessions was “The Great Diamond Challenge”.
On the first of the three days, students were introduced to the challenge and took part in a treasure hunt, a Maths session and a History session. This allowed them to explore our school site, meet some of our teachers and find clues for the rest of the challenge.
Unfortunately, due to the National Lockdown, the remaining two days had to be cancelled.
Reading Rangers - Annually
Every year, Miss Taylor (our brilliant librarian) trains a group of Year 7 students to become “Reading Rangers”. They are trained to support younger students with their reading and to encourage independent reading. Once trained, the group then visits our primary schools over a series of weeks, to support Year 5 students with their independent reading development in their Literacy lessons.
Beatles - 2019
A fantastic performance of a medley of Beatles songs by students from a variety of our primary schools, organised by Hayley Roberts from the West Norfolk Academies Trust.
Hayley visited all participating primary schools for a series of practice days, where students learned to perform a range of Beatles’ songs. The students then came together to perform their versions of the songs to parents and teachers at a superb cabaret-style event in Smithdon’s Main Hall.
The “Smithdon Community Primary Choir” were so impressive that they also went on to perform some numbers at Kings Lynn’s Festival Too! event.
2020’s “Motown” performance had to be postponed due to lockdown: so watch this space!
‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ - 2019
Primary students were invited to Smithdon to watch a special performance of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Smithdon’s Main Hall. They then took part in a range of workshops focussing around the storyline of the play with experiences including dance, craft and drama - all led by the actors themselves.
British Science Week - Annually
Each year during British Science Week (usually beginning in the second week of March) Smithdon’s STEMM Club students, led by Mrs Soper, run a science outreach programme.
Students travel around our primary schools to deliver a well-prepared lesson and workshop to Years 3 and 4 students, following the year’s British Science Week identified theme. March 2020’s theme was ‘Our Diverse Planet’ and our students were able to visit a handful of schools before Lockdown forced us to cancel.
We are planning for 2021’s theme of ‘Innovating for the Future’ - watch this space for more information in the new year!
Art Exhibition - 2019
In February 2019, Smithdon High School was proud to present our first Art Exhibition, featuring work from a number of our primary schools’ pupils as well as our own students. This excellent collaboration also included canapes cooked and served by our after-school Food Club.
2020’s Exhibition was set to be even bigger, with a theme of the Natural World, and including music by our talented musicians - but had to be postponed. We hope we will be able to hold this in 2021 - check back for more information.
Primary School Sports Festival - Annually
Smithdon’s Year 10 students all complete a Smithdon Sports Leaders course in their PE lessons. The leadership skills developed are then put into practice in the summer term, when we host the Smithdon Primary School Sports Festival.
Over 350 Year 3 & 4 pupils from 10 local primary schools attend an Olympic-themed sports festival, fully organised and delivered by our Year 10 Sports Leaders over one day.
