Governors’ Page

Welcome to the Governors’ page. Here you will find out about the current composition and working of the Governing Body, its role and how it supports the school on a day-to-day basis.

At Smithdon we have four types of Governor: three Governors are appointed by the Local Authority, five Parent Governors are elected by parents, four Staff Governors (the Headteacher and three members elected from the staff) and three Community Governors who are co-opted.

The current Chairman is Mr M Little. The Governing Body works through two committees; Curriculum & Outcomes and Resources & Pastoral. Governors meet seven times a year at full meetings and five times in committee.

The Governing Body has a strategic role in setting aims and objectives, agreeing targets, budgets, policies and priorities and monitoring effectiveness. It also evaluates the school’s performance through results and data, outside agency reports and the School Development Plan. Governors also compile their own Development Plan and review this annually.

The range of skill, experience and expertise among the Governors is considerable and this enables the Governing Body to support the school across many areas and in various ways. For example professional expertise supports subject areas, educational visits, pastoral issues, premises inspection and building projects. Each Governor is linked to a subject department, a management team or year group and regular contact is both encouraged and appreciated.

Governors attend all major school events, such as the Prize Presentation Evening and School Productions, and events involving parents, such as Parents’ Evenings, Induction Evenings and Option Evenings. They form a link between parents and staff if third party contact is needed and can always be reached through the school.

Governors attend a range of panels and appeal panels necessary for disciplinary, exclusion and professional issues.

The governors are an enthusiastic and dedicated group who enjoy the school’s successes and progress. However, they take the role of ‘critical friend’ very seriously and challenge the school's Senior Leadership on issues of performance and effectiveness. Governors achieve the very best possible for the school through dealings with the Local Authority.

The Governing Body is presently comprised of the following:
